:: SAINT ROCH CEMETERY ::

“How’d you know where I was?” Parker asked as Eddie sped along the city streets, slowing down only slightly in order to get on the interstate.

“It was mostly luck. I hoped you’d make the same decisions I would, namely get in with a crowd, and you did. Smart boy.” Eddie gestured with his head toward the backseat. “Lucas and Cole are still pretty freaked out, but they’re happy to see you.”

Both Cole and Lucas reached over and shook Parker’s shoulders happily.

“Are we ever,” said Lucas.

“Definitely relieved,” Cole said, leaning forward. “And Lucas called Aunt Ruby. Everyone’s at the house with Mrs. Boudreaux. Evidently, your parents still have no idea what’s going on.”

“Well, they pretty much leave us to our own devices,” Parker replied. “But I’m happy you got to me before anyone else did.”

Eddie chuckled. “Me too. You were smart to use the alleys around the square. You got pretty far, too.”

“Yeah, I ducked out the back and ran like hell,” Parker said.

They pulled up to the front of Twilight Oaks. Eddie smiled. “All right, children. You’re safe. You might want to go through the back and get cleaned up before your parents get a good look at you. You’re lookin’ like a bunch of N’awlins ragamuffins.”

Parker clutched his bag and got out of the car. “Thanks Eddie. I owe you one.”

“Anytime. Just tell me one thing … why were they after you? Doesn’t seem like a treasure hunt would cause this much commotion.”

“It’s not exactly a normal treasure hunt.” Lucas said sheepishly.

“It’s actually our Aunt Ruby…” Parker started.

Eddie laughed, “Y’know, I figured as much. Kids coming in to the Carousel Bar searching for vampire keys, that’s got Miss Ruby’s name all over it.”

“You know Aunt Ruby?” Lucas asked.

“You bet I do.” Eddie smiled, “So no worries. I owe that lady a lot. I’ll help her out any chance I get. And that goes for all y’all. You did a fantastic job, and I’m here to help.”

Eddie gave a salute, and when Cole and Lucas got out of the car, he drove off.

Cole and Lucas ran over to Parker and pounced on him before he could even put his bag down.

“Did they get you?” Lucas asked.

“Do I look got?”

“We were so worried…” Cole looked at Parker, concerned.

“I was fine.” Parker shrugged it off.

“Thank goodness.” Cole wrapped her arms around him. He blushed slightly but she didn’t notice.

“Nothing I couldn’t handle,” he mumbled.

They bounded through the back door and ran upstairs, calling out a quick “hi, hello, we’ll be right down” before anyone had the chance to see them.

A few minutes later mother’s voice rolled up the stairs, “Are you kids ready for dinner?”

“One minute!” Lucas shouted and he turned to Parker. “I actually can’t wait to meet this Mrs. Boudreaux … wow, you look exhausted.”

Parker nodded. “I felt like I was running forever, but in circles.” He smiled slightly. “And yeah, I’d like to skip dinner and go to sleep. Thank god you guys found me.”

Lucas quivered with excitement.
